THE all-conquering men’s second team at Winnington Park Hockey Club can now officially call themselves champions.

They went into their home game against Warrington – their first outing for three weeks – knowing a win would secure the North West Men’s Division Six South league title.

It was a nervy contest but they saw out a 1-0 victory to ensure the celebrations could begin, with Sean Morley getting the game’s only goal just before half time assisted by Rob Bowden.

It kept up their record of winning every game this season, with their 17 victories seeing them score 77 goals and concede just 16.

With the trophy in the bag, they will now aim to complete their three remaining games this season with their perfect record intact.

Before Morley’s goal, Park were rusty and while they had plenty of chances in attack, they could not get the final effort in on goal.

After the break, Mark Leigh pulled the strings up top and the hosts looked in control, but there was time for one last nervous moment.

Warrington’s striker had a one-on-one chance to equalise and took the ball round the keeper.

However, the Winnington defence scrambled back to snuff out the threat.
