WINNINGTON Park had the opportunity to make it three wins in a row and keep pace with those above them in the North Two West table on Saturday.

Unfortunately, it was an opportunity they passed up.

Injuries meant it was a reshuffled Park squad that made the short trip to mid-table Warrington, and they returned to Burrows Hill having been beaten 35-20.

The hosts started strongly, taking an early lead via a penalty as Park were adjudged offside and their pressure soon resulted in a converted try to take the score to 10-0.

Park struggled to build any phases and their scrum was under pressure, but Cam Flanagan did successfully kick a penalty to get them on the board following a ruck infringement from the hosts.

Another Flanagan penalty narrowed the gap further and following a scrappy period in which both sides were reduced to 14 men – Will Nelson the man to see yellow for Park – Warrington scored an unconverted try in the final minutes of the half.

The hosts started the second half as they had ended the first, scoring a five-point try following some missed tackles by Park.

However, this stirred the visitors into life and they were able to post their first try – hard running from Alex Glendinning and some good phases of play saw Nelson cross, with Flanagan converting.

Park were improving but could not convert their pressure into points until Nelson’s anticipation saw him score an interception try, with Flanagan again adding the extras.

Still, though, Park struggled for momentum and Warrington scored two late tries to seal their victory.

Park now sit fourth in the table and welcome Keswick – the side immediately above them – to Burrows Hill for their next match on Saturday.
