THINGS are getting going again at Winnington Park Hockey Club.

Saturday saw the start of the 2021-22 hockey season, with all five of the club’s senior teams getting their campaigns underway.

The women’s first team got off to a flyer in beating local rivals Crewe Vagrants’ first team in their opening fixture.

In an even match featuring plenty of goalmouth action, Park grabbed the only goal of the game through Lilly Lofthouse’s effort early in the second half.

Also victorious were the men’s second team, who thrashed their Sandbach counterparts 8-2.

After an early start, both sides had some cobwebs to dust off but one player who showed very few signs of ring rust was Harrison Austin.

He netted three goals in the first half as Park ended the opening period 3-2 ahead.

What followed was a dominant second-half display from the visitors, with Austin grabbing his fourth goal.

John Stackhouse, Dan Connor, Rob Bowden and Tom Howard all then grabbed a goal each as Park wrapped up a convincing win.

There were two goalless draws among the senior fixtures, for the women’s second team and the men’s thirds.

The women were away to Crewe Vagrants’ thirds in a match that ebbed and flowed. Both teams pressed but the defences stood firm.

The men were entertaining Deeside sevenths at The Grange High School and the visitors created the more clear-cut chances, but Park goalkeeper Tim Wylie ensured a clean sheet with a man-of-the-match display.

Unfortunately, the men’s firsts got off to a losing start as they were on the wrong end of a 6-1 scoreline at Lancaster & Morecambe’s firsts, with Nathan Gee getting Park’s only goal.

Park’s juniors were also in action, with the Beavers A side winning 13-0 against Oxton and the B team beating Brooklands 7-0.
