1874 NORTHWICH have confirmed the departure of record goalscorer Scott McGowan.

The frontman had only recently re-signed for the club having left Nantwich Town, but he has now decided to drop down a division to join North West Counties League Premier Division outfit Macclesfield FC.

McGowan marked his return by scoring a hat-trick in the Macron Cup Final win over Runcorn Town in July and netted twice in the six league and cup games he featured in subsequently.

However, he was not in the squad for Tuesday's 3-0 defeat to Leek Town and now, he is confirmed to have joined the Silkmen.

In a statement, 1874 said "regular contact" between McGowan and Macclesfield had become apparent to them over the recent weeks, with the newly-reformed club submitting a formal seven-day approach to speak to the striker about a move.

However, they were informed by the player earlier this week that he would be leaving the club.

"Scott made 199 appearances for 1874 – he returned from a spell with Nantwich Town at the end of the 2020/21 curtailed season and had no hesitation in agreeing to sign for the club," the statement read.

"This was not dependent on whether we were upwardly moved as he was prepared to remain in the North West Counties Premier League to help the club fight for the promotion it deserved.

"However, the FA did place 1874 in the Northern Premier League West, and this was a welcome bonus to Scott and everyone at the club.

"All were excited for the season ahead, which of course started with his hat-trick as we retained the Macron Cup against Runcorn Town.

"It has become apparent to us that over recent weeks, there has been regular contact between Scott and his new club.

"A formal seven-day approach was subsequently received last week and contained the assurance that contact would not be made until the notice period had ended.

"However, we were informed by Scott earlier this week that an agreement had been reached and he would be joining Macclesfield FC.

"1874 Northwich would like to thank Scott for his valuable contribution to our club over the last few years."
