Jack Owen tells the story of how 1874 Northwich picked up their first victory of the new season...

1874 travelled to Wythenshawe Town for a first ever meeting between the two clubs, looking to bounce back from Tuesday’s defeat to Kidsgrove Athletic.

The game’s start was frantic, with both sides giving it their all trying to get a foothold in the game.

It was 74 who broke the deadlock – Ash Woods reacted the quickest to slide in and stab home Callum Gardner’s delivery.

74 were now on top and Lee Jackson nearly had a goal of the season contender – his acrobatic effort had the keeper beaten but went just wide.

Wythenshawe drew level just after the half hour mark as Matthew Bryan rose highest in the middle of the box to power a header in to the bottom right corner of the goal, leaving Tony Aghayere with no chance.

The game’s deciding goal came in the second half – Callum Gardner met Ash Woods cross at the back post with a diving header which was parried by Jakovlevs, but only back in to the path of Gardner who was back on his feet to place a finish in to the bottom right corner.

Wythenshawe were reduced to 10 men on the hour mark when Jordan Rutter was dismissed for a late lunge on Sam Hare which left the 74 man needing treatment.

As the game became stretched with the hosts chasing an equaliser and playing with 10 men, there were a number of chances to put the game to bed.

Mike Koral led a 74 counter-attack only to see his effort cleared off the line by Joel Bemba Leta.

The final whistle sounded and it was 74 who did enough to advance to the next round of the FA Cup and keep the Wembley dream alive.
