EMILY Martin has been in quite stunning form for Weaver Valley Cycling Club.

She secured a first win of the year for both herself and the club as well as setting new personal bests and a new club record.

The victory came at the BDCA 50-mile time trial in Uttoxeter as she blitzed round the course in 1hour 51mins 59secs – more than 16 minutes quicker than her previous best.

She also claimed the long-standing club record from Jackie White, who set the previous best time of 2hours 7mins 29secs way back in 1987.

Sam Taylor also set a club record at the same race – he completed the course in a personal-best 1hour 45mins 58secs to beat the mark set by Carl Ruebotham in 2006.

Martin has also lowered her best time over the 25-mile Westmead88 CC time trial course near Chelford, taking advantage of good conditions to clock an excellent 57mins 42secs – a personal best by well over three minutes.

Taylor was the club’s quickest rider on the day as he stopped the clock at 54mins 18secs while Steve Marlow completed the course in 1hour 5mins 50secs.

Taylor also won Weaver Valley’s 10-mile championship on the roads around Allostock in 21mins 39secs, with Martin second in 23mins 8secs and Andy Milligan third in 23mins 15secs.

Meanwhile, Jeff Wood competed in the latest round of the TLI Bowland Vets League in Preston, making it into successive breakaway attempts.

All were pulled back by the bunch until the eventual winner – Andrew Whalley of Lakes RC – launched a brave solo attack and held off the challengers.

Woods eventually finished in a creditable eighth place.

Weaver Valley club runs have now resumed, starting at Winnington Park Rugby Club at 9.30am on Sundays. New members are welcome – visit weavervalleycc.org.uk for details.
