WITTON Albion will welcome Football League opposition to Wincham Park as part of their preparations for the new season.

The club confirmed they would be hosting League One outfit Crewe Alexandra for the third year in a row during the pre-season campaign.

Carl Macauley’s side face the Railwaymen on Wednesday, July 14, kick off 7.45pm.

David Artell's team contains a few faces who will be familiar to Wittoners, with Owen Dale, Luke Offord and Travis Johnson all having enjoyed an important taste of first team football at Wincham Park on loan earlier in their careers.

The Alex have visited Wincham Park for pre-season friendlies in each of the past two years, winning 3-0 in 2019 while they went one better last year with a 4-0 victory.

The game is the fifth friendly confirmed by Albion, with games against Northwich Victoria, Runcorn Linnets, Marine and Bala Town already pencilled in.

Meanwhile, striker Steven Tames is confirmed to have left Witton Albion.

The 29-year-old frontman has joined former side Prescot Cables, who ply their trade in the division below Witton – the Northern Premier League’s West Division.

Tames rejoined the club last summer after a prolific spell earlier in his career, but persistent injuries restricted his appearances.

He played eight games in the Covid-curtailed 2020-21 campaign without finding the back of the net and now joins former Albion teammate Josh Gregory at Prescot.
