BILLY Smart will remain a Witton Albion player for next season.

The club have confirmed the midfielder has agreed to be part of Carl Macauley's squad once again when the 2021-22 campaign gets underway.

Smart moved to Wincham Park from Marine in 2018 and has been a mainstay of the Albion midfield ever since.

He was a key part of the squad that took Witton into the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-off places last season before Covid-19 forced its curtailment.

If he is joined in committing his future to the club by the rest of his teammates, the 26-year-old believes they will be well placed for a fight at the right end of the league once again.

"For me, to stay was an easy decision," he said.

"We had a good start last season before the season was stopped, with the best squad I think we've had since I signed here.

"We would have been strong enough to push for the play-offs.

"Next season, if we can keep the majority of the squad together and maybe add one or two more, I fancy us to challenge again."

Smart has been a reliable supply of goals from midfield during his time at Witton and he aims to continue in that vain going forward.

As well as fighting for a play-off spot, the former Warrington Town man also believes the team is capable of adding some silverware to the Wincham Park trophy cabinet

"Personally, I want to play consistently well," he said.

"I'd like to chip in with my fair share of goals from midfield.

"And for the team, some success in terms of making the play-offs or a trophy win would be my targets for us in 21/22."
