SUPPORTERS of a new football club in Northwich have picked a name for the team they will follow next season.

Close to 150 fans turned out for a ballot arranged by Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust, whose members decided a fortnight ago to launch a new version of their favourite club.

More than half said 1874 Northwich was their preferred option.

“Two weeks ago our new club was born, now it has been christened,” read a trust statement.

“It’s been a pleasure to see so many Vics fans talking in a positive way about our future and what we might achieve.”

More than 100 fans, including some from outside of the trust, cast their vote in person during an open forum at Lostock on Thursday night.

In total, 77 supporters picked 1874 Northwich – the year in which Northwich Victoria accepted a challenge from college students in nearby Comberbach to play a first match – as their choice from a list of four alternatives.

AFC Northwich, with 44 votes, was the next best.

“It was a sterling effort by so many people, including a high proportion of non-members, turn out on what was a cold and bitter Thursday evening,” added the trust statement.

The group counts now on more than 200 members, a figure in double figures at the start of the year.

Its chairman, Paul Stockton, told the Guardian earlier this week that the new club’s colours would be green and white.

“Nobody can rob us of our heritage,” he said.

“We understand why some supporters might not have yet joined [the trust], but we want to convince them that our vision is the only way forward.”
