THE country as a whole is in a battle to get back on its feet after the coronavirus pandemic forced an unprecedented national lockdown.
However, the Warrington and District Football League’s showdown with Covid-19 has been much more personal.
Fixtures get back underway on Saturday and that is thanks largely to league secretary Steve Lyon.
He has been credited with almost single-handedly getting the league back up and running again – all while recovering from being diagnosed with coronavirus himself.
The league’s public relations officer picks up the story.
“We must not forget those people who have worked hard to get the game back on and Steve Lyon deservedly falls into the category of local hero,” he said.
“Shortly after lockdown, he fell ill himself and was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with Covid-19.
“After spending two weeks under observation, he was fortunate enough to return home – he was much weakened and a lot lighter, but it was a big relief for all his family.
“Despite this, he has since fought almost single-handedly to get the WDFL up and running for the new season, arranging interviews and sorting Microsoft Teams so the league could continue to run.
“His hard work and dedication in times of his own adversity has made him an unselfish superhero and ensured we can all return as safely as possible.”
“So, when that first ball gets kicked this weekend let us remember how we got there.
“The dedication of a few and the commitment of the many have made it possible, so let us not spoil it and make sure we follow guidelines and be safe.”
