WEAVER Valley Cycling Club’s volunteers staged the ninth round of the North West Cyclo Cross League at the Cheshire Show Ground at Tabley.

The course included several loops of the ground, and the going was heavy and in some places very muddy.

Races were held for age groups ranging from under eights to over 50s.

The winner of the senior race was Giles Drake from Wheelbase RC, while the women’s race was won by World Masters Champion Nicola Davies from Cyclocross.com.

Nicola’s achievement was extraordinary from a rider who also competes in the over 60s age group, yet she beat 20 riders all younger than her.

Weaver Valley was well represented in several age groups.

In the women’s race, Eleanor Underhill finished 14th, Lynsey Astles 16th, and novice rider Kaylee Inglis rode strongly to come 17th, despite riding a mountain bike which put her at a disadvantage against the other riders on specialist lighter cyclo cross bikes.

In the men’s races, Kevin Waton came 38th out of 46 riders in the senior race, while in the over 50s race in a field of 66 riders Andy Milligan came 15th, Dan Robson 55th, and Dave Halman came 63rd, also winning the over 70s category.

So far in the league, with two more races to go, several Weaver Valley riders are doing well in terms of their cumulative position.

Lynsey Astles is ranked seventh in the women’s competition, and in the men’s competition, Kevin Waton is currently standing at 12th in the senior category, Nick Riding 16th in the over 40s, Andy Milligan 13th in the over 50s, and Dave Halman first in the over 70s.
