NORTHWICH Victoria backed up their midweek cup heroics with a first league win since November over Avro at Wincham Park.

Saul Henderson scored the only goal of the game after 57 minutes.

"The pleasing thing for us is we've kept two clean sheets in two games," said Vics manager Steve Wilkes.

"Danny Taberner played well on Wednesday and Mike Hale made a fantastic save in the last five minutes to keep it at 1-0.

"We deserved it overall. There weren't many chances, neither keeper had much to do but I'm pleased with the passion and energy that we've shown because that's not been there the last few months."

After a number of games in which Vics have failed to win after taking the lead at the back end of 2019 action was taken to ensure it didn't happen again against Avro.

"As a manager you learn every season and we've been in front in so many games and not won those games so we sat down as a management team the past few weeks and said if we go in front we need to change things," said Wilkes.

"We did that, we went to 4-5-1 for the last 15 minutes and we could have made it 2-0.

"We could have picked them off a little bit better. We got into the final third in the last 10 minutes and had some good opportunities but didn't quite make the right pass."

Ryan Winder has a stomach injury that will need assessing before Vics visit Bootle on Tuesday.
