THE VICS COLUMN - Peter Tonge

THIS month started disappointingly for the Vics, with defeats in both the FA Vase, and the Macron League Cup.

The FA Vase saw us beaten 2-1 by Wythenshawe Town in a replay after a 5-all thriller at Wincham Park at the start of the month, a game that saw us throw away a three-goal lead.

Oh well, that’s football for you…and at this time of year, games come thick and fast.

As this goes to press, we will still have four more games to play this month, and by month-end we will have played eight games, with the only midweek break coming courtesy of the weather when we were due to play our local rivals, Winsford United.

This would have been the game where we remembered a former captain of our club, Kenny Jones, who sadly died earlier this month aged 72.

Arguably one of Vics’ greatest ever players and our record appearance holder having played 961 games for the Green and Whites, Kenny captained the team to FA Trophy glory in 1984 when we defeated Bangor City in the final.

We will be hoping to commemorate him at our next home match on 27 November against Barnoldswick Town.

In honour of him, we shall be wearing our commemorative 35th FA Trophy Anniversary kit and I'm sure there will be a good numbers of Trickies attending his funeral the next day, 28 November which is being held at Landican Cemetery in Woodchurch, Wirral at 12.30pm.

As well as all the football going on this month, there’s the chance to meet the manager tonight, Thursday, at 7.15pm at Wincham Community Centre.

Manager Steve Wilkes will be in attendance for a question and answer session with fans. This is your chance to ask any questions you may have and as always I'm sure he’ll be be very open and honest with his replies.

Vics are also planning a Race Night on Friday, December 6, again at Wincham Community Centre. This is always an enjoyable evening, and it’s open to all.

Tickets are £5 and there will be food available as well as a licensed bar, if you’re interested please contact Graham Egerton on 07845 180927 for details.

Next Matches: Saturday, 23 November away at Skelmersdale Utd 3pm.

Wednesday, 27 November at home to Barnoldswick Town 7.45pm.
