PERHAPS the adage 'football is a funny old game' perfectly fits the past week for Witton Albion.

They slid from beating runaway BetVictor Northern Premier League leaders South Shields 3-1 to losing 2-0 at bottom club Buxton, with a decent 1-0 home win against Ashton United in between.

Carl Macauley's side became only the second side in 13 league matches this season to lose to the Bucks.

The hosts were pretty dominant too, with the two goals in 11 minutes midway through the second half from Diego De Girolamo being nothing less than they deserved.

Girolamo, in fact, was unlucky not to finish the game with a sackful.

In an amazing three-minute spell in the closing stages of the first half he hit the crossbar three times.

Witton, who handed a debut to loan signing Isaac Baldwin from Farsley Celtic, enjoyed a decent share of the possession but rarely troubled a Bucks side that have now kept three clean sheets in their last four appearances.

As a result of the outcome, Albion dropped one place to 10th while Buxton climbed three spots from the foot of the table.

Witton's attention switches to the Cheshire Senior Cup at home to neighbours 1874 Northwich at Wincham Park on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
