THE VICS COLUMN – with Paul Kelsall

THE Northwich Vixens took a big step towards FA cup glory last weekend with a thrilling comeback win away to Arnold Eagles of Nottingham.

Trailing to two early first half goals the Vixens hauled themselves level in the tie via headed goals by Jen Jacques and Rachael Deighton before a stunning 94th minute winner courtesy of a long range free kick by Jo Case.

Which sparked jubilant scenes and was enough to see the green and whites progress into the next round.

It was a thoroughly deserved turnaround for the team who had dominated through out and played some of the most impressive play of their season so far.

With a win in the first qualifying round against Bury under their belt , and with this victory it’s no surprise that the club are feeling confident and cup fever is gripping the supporters.

The reward is a 3rd round home tie against local rivals Altrincham this Sunday with a run towards the first round proper becoming the focus.

This would see some of the bigger names in the women’s game start to enter.

Captain Michaela Thompson added: “It was a really fantastic moment for us to see that winning goal go in, and the cup run has really got the whole club buzzing.

“We can’t wait for the next game now.

“We have so much passion for the club and it meant everything to us.

“We are fully focused on delivering a performance to take us into the next round.

“It would be fantastic if we got as many supporters as possible down Lostock this Sunday to help cheer us on to that all important win and get the club into the draw for the next round.”

The Vixens are proving to be a big hit with female players across the area and the newly formed link with the Northwich Vickies junior teams means there is now a full player pathway for all local girls to play football in the area.

This season’s newly formed Vixens development team have also started strongly with two wins from three games, so the future is bright for the club.

The club are hoping that the people of Northwich get behind the team and come down and support them on their way to cup glory. And, who knows that famous Northwich name could yet be heading down the road towards Wembley way.

The green and whites are doing Northwich proud. Viva la Vixens!

The next match is Sunday, 6 October with the FA Cup tie between Northwich Vixens and Altrincham Ladies with a 2pm kick off at Lostock Gralam FC, Manchester Road. Admission is free.
