MARK Wakefield heads to Donington Park this weekend knowing the title is still achievable.

The 21-year-old Northwich driver goes into the final two races of the Volkswagen Racing Cup campaign sitting second in the drivers’ standings.

Sitting 14 points adrift of the leader Owen Walton, while Martin Depper is a further eight points behind in third, all three places remain unsettled.

Wakefield, and his HSG Sport prepared Golf, kept his title hopes alive with a podium finish last time out at Brands Hatch.

After that weekend, he said he already believes he has surpassed his own expectations this season by still being in the running for a title with one round left.

That will have felt like a remote possibility before the first race back in April.

“We went from being in a team, with all of the backing and support that brings, to having to form our own,” he said.

“When you look at it like that, it’s brilliant to be in contention.

“Of course from here I now want to go on and win it.”

He finished ninth in the drivers’ standings last year.

n CYCLING: Weaver Valley Cycling Club’s Sam Taylor went to Uttoxeter to compete in the BDCA 100-mile time trial.

Taylor fought through back pain, which started at around 75 miles, to finish in a personal best of 3:51:33, averaging 25.9 mph.

The event was won by a round the world cyclist, Jonathon Shubert from Arctic Aircon RT, in a very fast 3:19:58.

Then on Sunday Alistair Stanway travelled to South Wales to compete in the Port Talbot CC 25-mile time trial.

Stanway started fast with a slight breeze but felt good and kept a high pace to the turn. The return leg involved him fighting against a strengthening wind, but he maintained his rhythm, and finished in a lifetime best of 53.13, averaging 28.2 mph.

The event was won by Chris Boddy of Team Aerocoach in an impressive 45:05.

Elsewhere, in the second round of the North West Cyclo Cross league event, on a technically challenging course at Hoghton Tower near Preston, Lynsey Astles finished 6th in her age category, with Nick Riding 12th and Kevin Watson 23rd in theirs.
