CHESHIRE’S latest bid to win the British Senior County Championship ended on Sunday when they lost to the reigning champions.

However there was plenty to be encouraged by despite losing by 23 chalks on aggregate against Warwick & Worcester – their conquerors in the 2015 final.

Glynn Cookson, of Wharton Cons, recorded an emphatic 21-3 victory against Elliot McGuinness in the home leg at Metro Sports and Social Club in Stretford.

He was one of eight winners during a 220-189 win.

Meanwhile Castle, the Mid-Cheshire Bowling Association champions, most players for the away leg at the George Bowling Club in Oldbury.

Two of those, captain Rob Winnington and Steve Morrey, were among the visitors’ three winners.

Neil Smith, of Houldsworth, was the other.

Matty Hamman stepped in to take the place of Castle clubmate Steve Curbishley, scoring 11 against Carl Fielding.

Andy Hamman and Mike Yearsley, two more regulars at the Northwich club, did well to post 18 and 17 respectively in a 239-185 reverse.

Jason Cornes and Dave O’Brien completed Castle’s contingent, while Daniel Nixon (Wharton Cons) and Neal Ocego (Frodsham Red Lion) were on duty too in the West Midlands.

Cheshire finish bottom of Section Two with two defeats but the fact they were drawn with two teams that contested last year’s final made their task a daunting one.

Warwick & Worcester will take on South Yorkshire next month to decide who goes through to the semi-finals stage.
