KEVAN Underhill stood on the podium for his age-group category during the TLI Closed Circuit National Championships at Oulton Park.

The Weaver Valley Cycling Club rider, contesting the over 60s class, was involved in several attempts to break clear – none successful – on Sunday.

He was passed by Steve Wilkinson (Element Cycling Team) and Geoff Rawlinson (St Helens Racing Club) during a sprint for the line in the final 600m.

Weaver Valley’s Dave Walker took fifth in the over 40s race, losing out to Rob Sorby (Manx Viking Wheelers) by a bike-length in a drag to the finish.

A third club member, Sean Roberts, classified 12th among the over 50s in a section won by John Fiddies (Team Lusso).

Emily Martin contested the sixth round of the Tameside Race League as part of a 22-strong field.

The Weaver Valley star could not bridge a gap to riders that broke clear during the early stages of a 19-mile race, instead taking fifth place in the senior women’s race following a secondary sprint to the finish.

Laura Cheeseman (Evans Cycles) pipped her to fourth, while Kim Baptista (Westland Wil Vooruit) took first place after victor Monica Eden (Macclesfield Wheelers) was demoted as a punishment for an infringement in the closing stages.
