Winnington rewarded for attacking intent against Glossop

MATT Farr hailed his side’s ability to keep their supporters enthralled after Winnington Park dashed Glossop’s faint promotion play-off hopes.

They ran in six tries to end a sequence of four successive defeats in Lancs/Cheshire Division One, a timely boost ahead of a Cheshire RFU Bowl final later this month.

“We certainly entertained the crowd,” said the head coach.

“However it’s frustrating for me to watch us go off the boil and get into trouble during games after taking the lead.

“The challenge remains to stay focused for 80 minutes.”

Park started swiftly and took the lead when captain Dave Cross passed to Shaun Underdown and the prop powered through the visitors’ defence to score.

A second try followed when Jack Williams won a foot-race to a ball kicked into the corner before inviting wing Jimmy Moran to touch down.

Glossop put their first points on the board with a penalty-kick but it was a temporary respite before Lee Allmark crossed the whitewash after Underdown stole possession for his team.

However Winnington’s opponents rallied impressively and drove over the line from an attacking lineout to reduce their arrears.

One of their wing men then chased a punt forward from halfway to add to their tally and a third try, this time converted, established a 20-15 interval lead at Burrows Hill.

A feisty opening to the second-half saw Alex Glendinning tap a penalty awarded for a high tackle before going over the line.

The referee showed a red card to Glossop’s stand-off for his part in a fracas that followed before Cameron Flanagan landed the conversion.

Glendinning sped clear to claim his second try, again improved by Flanagan, as Park reasserted their authority in the contest.

Farr chose that moment to introduce another promising talent from the club’s senior colts team when he sent on Jamie Hawes.

The away team scored next, exploiting a temporary numerical advantage after scrum-half Matt Cross was shown a yellow card for a trip.

However the youngster added gloss to his side’s display when he darted through a gap in Glossop’s defensive line to claim a debut try.

Flanagan added the extras too.

Farr added: “We played well in a tough match against a bigger pack.”
