EMILY Martin continued an encouraging start to a new season last weekend when she took fourth during Lancaster University Cycling Club’s second Spring criterium race.

The Weaver Valley Cycling Club member gained three places during a bunch sprint to the line at Salt Ayre Sports Centre at the end of a 40-minute, plus five laps, women’s race.

There had been several attacks during the early stages, but all of them were neutralised.

Laura Cheeseman (Evans Cycles RT) claimed first prize.

Sam Taylor, also a Weaver Valley member, classified seventh in a men’s race for British Cycling third and fourth-category riders at the same venue.

Three riders that broke away early took the podium positions and, despite his best effort, he could not persuade rivals in the bunch to join an attempt to catch them.

Jack Crook (Liverpool Mercury CC) edged out James Foggensteiner (University of Manchester CC) for first place.
