BARNTON could not prevent their guests from recording a first win in the North West Counties League since October.

Captain Colm Lynch’s looping header from Tom Hackett’s free-kick separated the sides as Cammell Laird avenged a defeat in the return.

The Villagers’ best chance went the way of Leon Wright, who received before kick-off a player of the month award for January, but he fired over when well-placed.

At the other end, Tom Murray forced goalkeeper Arran Lyons to save smartly before Lynch put his side in front.

The goal-scorer was thwarted by another fine stop by Lyons after Hackett’s flick sent him clear before Elliot Jones’ curling set-piece struck an upright.

Cammell Laird cursed their luck again when Rob Ablewhite poked the ball past Lyons and against a post before Barnton’s custodian picked it up.

He was equal to another effort from Lynch before James McShane’s men mounted a late rally to try and pinch a point.

They went closest to an equaliser when debutant goalkeeper Paul Davies tipped an effort over the crossbar from Ste Rothwell, who started the campaign with the Camemlls.
