DARRHYL Mason’s goal sparked a recovery by Northwich Victoria at Histon that took them to the FA Vase last eight.

The forward scored again during extra-time to put Steve Wilkes’ side in front before substitute Jordan Darr put the game out of the 10-man Stutes.

They had lost only once at the Glassworld Stadium this season in 18 matches before this one, and that to higher-ranked opponents in the FA Cup.

But Vics, coincidentally winners on the same pitch 12 years earlier to the weekend in an FA Trophy tie that was also rewarded with a quarter-finals place, were unmoved.

Mason’s speed led to him having the clearest sight of goal during a nervy opening period, but his attempt skimmed wide via a deflection Histon’s most noteworthy effort was a header from Danny Gould that didn’t trouble goalkeeper Danny Taberner.

The Stutes improved after the interval and Brown ought to have done better than shoot too close to Taberner after running onto Pat Bexfield’s hooked pass.

He was more accurate after reacting quickly to reach James Chivers’ clearance, lifting a perfectly-weighted lob over a stranded custodian and into the net.

Steve Wilkes’ side drew level on 71 minutes when Mason leapt to meet Harvey Whyte’s cross with a close-range header.

Vics were brightest during the early stages off extra-time and edged in front when Mason slammed home Joel Brownhill’s low cross after his teammate had made inroads on the right.

Histon’s hopes were dented when Green was sent off by referee Robert Massey-Ellis as punishment for his challenge on Jack Fleming and the visitors seized control.

Substitute Dom Craig was denied by Max York’s block on the line after he had dribbled around goalkeeper Sam Roach before another Northwich replacement, Brian Matthews, saw his shot rattle an upright.

Vics kept their hosts at arm’s length for the most part although they survived a scare when York met Brown’s fizzing cross with a volley at the back-post that he could not control.

Darr settled the outcome with time running out, steering the ball under Roach at the end of a counter-attack.
