WINNINGTON Park prepared for one of their toughest assignments of the season with an authoritative performance that coach Matt Farr rated as among their best.

They scored nine tries against opponents that had beaten them 45-12 back in October and travel to Glossop on Saturday buoyed by three successive wins.

“That’s as well as we’ve played,” said Farr.

“The lads worked hard; our forwards’ drives were powerful and the backs handled well in blustery conditions.”

Jack Williams went over on seven minutes at Burrows Hill and the hosts did not look back.

Southport replied with a penalty before Williams turned provider for Harry Stubbs to notch Park’s second try at the end of a slick passing move.

Cameron Flanagan converted.

The visitors landed another three-pointer awarded for an infringement at the ruck before a Winnington maul pushed back their guests and Danny Williams dotted down.

Flanagan added the extras before Park erred again, this time not releasing the ball, to gift Southport another opportunity to kick a penalty which they took.

It did not put off the hosts and a fourth try followed when another forwards-led drive ended with Danny Williams scoring and Flanagan converting.

Shaun Underdown was next to cross the line, again following a maul, before replacement forward Gary Dykes claimed their sixth try shortly before the interval.

The pattern continued in the second-half and Winnington needed only eight minutes to add to their tally when Stubbs resisted an attempt by several defenders to hold him up.

Flanagan remained reliable.

Underdown doubled personal total for the afternoon after another maul formed following a lineout before Jack Williams darted down the side of Southport’s defence to complete the scoring.

Farr added: “We’re playing with confidence, proven by us scoring nine tries, and I’m sure our supporters went home happy.”
