JAMES McShane has said he expects sharper shooting from Barnton’s players after they wasted chances during a draw with Alsager.

The Villagers had put five goals past the Bullets when the teams met at Townfield back in October but they had to settle for a share of the spoils despite taking the lead last weekend.

“We weren’t clinical enough,” said the Barnton manager.

“It’s important to be ruthless and put teams away and I feel that we dropped two points.”

Leon Wright found the net for a third time in as many matches since a transfer from Runcorn Town to put Barnton in front in the eighth minute.

The young striker made a perfect connection with his shot, leaving Alsager goalkeeper Ben Cortes-Smith with no chance of making a save.

It jolted the hosts and they restored parity after quarter of an hour when debutant Guyguy Maboy applied the finishing touch to a team move.

Barnton ended the opening period in the ascendancy with Wright and Jamie Weeder going close.

Recent recruit Ste Rothwell was next to try his luck early in the second-half but his shot found the side-netting after Alsager had failed to clear from a corner.

The Villagers dominated for long periods without finding a way through and their custodian Arran Lyons had to alert at the other end when the home team launched a counter-attack.

Ryan Malone was thwarted by Cortes-Smith’s find save with time running out before Rothwell’s goal-bound effort was held up on a wet surface and a defender recovered to clear the danger.

McShane added: “Leon took his shot early and look what happened.

“If we can do more of the same then we’ll win more games than we lose.

“However I was happy to see us dig and make sure we left with at least a point.”
