CAMERON Flanagan’s kicking made the difference for Winnington Park last weekend when they completed a double over Leigh.

The stand-off landed half-a-dozen penalties to help his side end a sequence of four successive defeats away from Burrows Hill.

He put the visitors in front from the first of those although Leigh were swift to respond through Jamie King at the end of a backs-led move.

Rob Drake’s three-pointer midway through the first-half added to the home team’s advantage but it was quickly reduced when Flanagan replied in kind from long distance.

Drake then repeated his earlier trick to make it 11-6.

Park’s gradually played their way into the contest and were unlucky not to score a try following prop Shaun Underdown’s barnstorming run.

After he was grounded, they recycled possession from the resulting ruck before Nick Clawson – on his return to first-team duty following a lengthy absence – was tackled into touch.

Winnington carried that momentum into the second-half and were rewarded for their pressure when Flanagan again skilfully converted a penalty from long-range.

When he sent another kick between the posts, the visitors led 12-11.

Danny Williams then darted through a gap in the home team’s defence to add to that advantage.

A second try almost followed when teenager Sam Houghton’s break started a move that broke down just short.

Leigh rallied, and Drake sped to the Park line after Sam Holgate’s initial surge led to the ball being shipped across to his teammate.

A successful conversion made it 18-17 with quarter of an hour left.

Matt Farr’s men stayed calm, and pressure on their opponents told when they were awarded a penalty that Flanagan sent against an upright.

He was unnerved though, and was on-target from his next two attempts.

It made the difference, and Park held Leigh at arm’s length for the remainder.
