JORDAN Penfold was the hero for Warrington Hockey Club’s men’s first team as they reached the final of the Lancashire Knockout Shield.

His winner before the break secured a 2-1 semi-final victory over Bury and their chance to win the trophy on April 6.

Ben Vickers had put Warrington ahead from a short corner but Bury equalised before Penfold calmly rounded the keeper to slot home the winner.

The Warrington defence and goalkeeper Roger Parr remained resolute for the entire second half to seal victory.

Elsewhere, the women’s seconds earned a hard-fought draw against Chester’s thirds on Saturday.

They took the lead in the first half thanks to a well-worked short corner routine between Molly Rudd and goal scorer Vicky Stoll.

Warrington pressed hard for a second but they could not break through and Chester were able to force an equaliser.

The women’s firsts continued their winning streak with a comfortable 3-0 win away at Rhyl.

Steph Rawlins was the star of the show as she scored a hat-trick while defenders Carrie Wright, Kirsty Anderson, Dawn Harrington and Holly McCurrie thwarted several breaks from the hosts.
