WITTON Albion edged out Matlock Town to celebrate a victory on home turf in the Northern Premier League for the first time since early November.

They benefitted from a stroke of luck to break through against the Gladiators when full-back Lee Beevers diverted the ball into his own net six minutes after the interval.

However Carl Macauley’s men were better than their guests for long spells, particularly during the first-half, and went closest to scoring before the break when Rob Hopley’s header struck the crossbar.

They rise to 14th in the Premier Division table as a reward for their win, and are now seven points clear of the relegation zone.
