5. POOL: England selectors look to Northwich Pool League duo
What? Eric Webber and Jo Taylor make mark for national team
When? October
There was recognition for two of the Northwich and District Pool League’s best players in the Autumn.
Eric Webber, a regular Cheshire and also a star turn for Gladstone C, was invited by manager Malcolm Johnston to take over as captain of England’s under 23s team to succeed Craig Lauder.
He was part of a side that enjoyed a run to the World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF) World Championships final in June and won a crucial deciding frame against Malta in the last four.
His composure under pressure did not go unnoticed.
Jo Taylor was part of an England Ladies side that emerged as victors from the annual Home Internationals, held this time around in Stockport.
Another who has represented her county for years, and is a six-time ladies’ singles champion in Northwich, her hard work and determination to improve is at last being recognised.

Our sports writer remembers:
“I often tell people who aren’t aware that the Northwich Pool League is a genuine hidden gem.
“It has consistency nurtured young talent, and Eric is the latest example, because those players can compete weekly at a high standard and in a supportive atmosphere.
“For a town the size of ours to have two current internationals, including one who will lead the national team next year, is a remarkable achievement.
“Eric and Jo have followed a path taken by others, whether that is to trials, national championships or international duty, before them and I hope they’ll inspire others to try their luck.
“I have interviewed both of them over the past 12 months, and their pride at reaching the level they have was easy to sense.
“It’s genuinely exciting to consider what they might do next with England in 2019.”
