BEN Currie is “flying” in his recovery from a serious knee injury – but Steve Price says it is too early to say whether or not he will be fit to start The Wire’s 2019 campaign.

The second rower is rehabilitating from a second anterior cruciate ligament operation in as many years but has been training with the squad during pre-season.

However, he has not yet been cleared to resume full contact training – something that is not expected to happen until at The Wire's pre-season training camp in Portugal next month.

Currie suffered his latest injury in the Challenge Cup victory over Bradford Bulls in April – a recurrence of the problem that saw him miss much of the 2017 campaign.

Price says he is delighted with the progress the 24-year-old is making.

The Wire head coach insists, however, that Currie will not be rushed back.

“Ben Currie is flying. He’s been doing really well,” he said.

“I’m really pleased with the progress he has made, as are the rest of the high performance and medical staff.

“It’s a credit to Ben in how diligent he’s been with his rehab.

“He’s getting a lot of volume in his legs and has done a fair amount of running, which is really positive.

“We’re not quite sure if he’ll be ready to start the season. It’s still fairly early for that.

“He still has a few boxes to tick. We won’t rush him and he won’t come back until he’s absolutely fine and ready to go.

“That’s the way it has to be for Ben’s long-term future.”
