WINNINGTON Park take with them momentum into a new year after scoring eight tries to complete a double over Hoylake.

It leaves them sixth in Lancs/Cheshire Division One at the end of 2018 and head coach Matt Farr is optimistic that they can improve when the campaign resumes next month.

“We should feel confident we can hold our own at this level,” he said.

“I was happy with our collective performance [against Hoylake] and it was nice to get some of those lads returning from injury back on the field.”

The league’s back-markers took the game to Park during the early exchanges and played for a spell with a man advantage after Mike Eaves had been shown a yellow card.

However Winnington resisted and took the lead when Harry Stubbs’ pass sent Jack Williams over.

Cameron Flanagan added a successful conversion.

Stubbs followed up with a trademark surge to the line, another score improved by Flanagan, to establish a 14-0 interval lead at Burrows Hill.

Danny Williams marked his comeback after a lay-off with a fine solo try that saw him duck and dive out of opponents’ reach before dotting down between the posts.

He made way for another returning forward in the shape of Alex Glendinning as Park continued to dominate.

Jimmy Moran was next to go over in the corner before Shaun Underdown added his name to a growing list of try-scorers after powering through the visitors’ defence.

A sixth try arrived via scrum-half James Johnson before wing Chris Twigg applied a finishing flourish after Glendinning had carried the ball forward.

Twigg doubled his personal tally to complete the scoring and Flanagan converted.

Farr added: “Our supporters deserve thanks for braving the conditions and hopefully they were entertained by some well-drilled rugby.”
