ONLY one visiting side had left the Northolme unscathed before Witton arrived on Saturday and they were the league leaders.

That makes Albion’s point a precious one against opponents that had won six of their previous seven Northern Premier League matches in front of their own supporters.

They enjoyed some fortune, and were spared by wayward shooting by Gainsborough forwards in the second-half, but Carl Macauley will feel his players were due that following last weekend’s painful FA Trophy exit.

Rob Hopley was the first to test Jon Stewart, prompting the hosts’ goalkeeper to divert his low effort around a post after combining with James Foley.

From the resulting corner, River Humphreys could not make a firm enough contact to force the ball over the line.

Cesaire was next to shoot at goal, after Hopley had nudged Anthony Gardner’s long throw into his path, but he dragged his effort wide of the far upright.

Trinity responded, and both Shane Clarke and former Northwich Victoria wide man Alex Byrne saw shots dip too late to trouble Witton custodian Greg Hall.

At the other end, Cesaire was denied by Branden Horton’s timely block as he shaped to shoot.

Albion broke through in the moments before half-time when Gainsborough defender Joe Maguire accidentally diverted Foley’s curling free-kick into his own goal.

Trinity improved after the interval, and Worsfold fluffed a glorious opportunity conjured by Byrne when he steered wide of the target with only Hall to beat.

The front man was thwarted again when he nudged Alex Simmons’ shot into the net from an offside position inside the six-yard box.

Hopley fired over after a loose ball dropped kindly before Gainsborough drew level on 70 minutes.

Hall parried Byrne’s stinging volley from outside of the penalty area before Simmons redirected the rebound onto Worsfold’s head at the back post.

Both teams searched for a decisive goal and substitute Will Booth, on for Foley who had sustained an ankle injury, headed Hopley’s cross wide.

Trinity replacement Ross Hannah ought to have done better than shoot straight at Hall after Clarke had poked the ball his way before fellow substitute Jonny Margetts failed to hit the target on two occasions.
