THIS year’s bwin Grand Slam of Darts starts in Wolverhampton on Saturday when stars from the sport’s two biggest bodies – the PDC and the BDO – compete at the same tournament.

And tomorrow’s opening round of group-stage matches marks exactly five years since Northwich ace Stuart Kellett celebrated a first victory in front of the television cameras since joining the PDC circuit.

And he did so in style.

Trailing 4-2 against Kevin Painter in a contest he had to win following a whitewash against then world number one Phil Taylor on his debut at the event, the Cheshire man rallied to prevail.

His opponents missed two match darts in the seventh leg before Kellett hit back to level at 4-4 before taking a decider in 14 darts.

“I’m so chuffed,” he said.

“I showed a lot of bottle and I dug in.”

Kellett was later denied a place in the second round when he lost a winner-takes-all meeting with Aussie Paul Nicholson.
