WINNINGTON Park demonstrated an opportunistic streak to punish Fleetwood’s ill-discipline and put behind them a disappointing display seven days earlier.

The visitors’ almost matched their hosts’ try tally, but Cameron Flanagan slotted four penalties - and three conversions – to put his side out of reach.

“His kicking provided a platform on which to build a lead,” said head coach Matt Farr.

Winnington led inside 10 minutes when Alex Glendinning darted to the line and Flanagan added the extras.

Fleet responded with an interception try for Karl Bowling before a hand-off from Jordan Brocklehurst allowed him to touch down.

Gavin Rowell’s conversion followed.

Flanagan was successful with a three-point attempt following a high-tackle and repeated the trick after an opponent was caught offside.

Park scored again before the interval when Shaun Underdown powered over the line at the end of a driving maul following a lineout.

They increased their total in similar fashion, this time from an attacking scrum, when captain Dave Cross dotted down.

Flanagan improved on his score to make it 25-12.

Rothwell went over for Fleet only for Park to reply with a try of their own when Glendinning tapped a penalty and resisted attempts by three defenders to stop him from scoring.

Brad Stapleton went over in the corner for the visitors at the end of a flowing backs move before in-form Flanagan again made an opportunity count to kick a penalty.

A fourth three-pointer followed before centre Sam Brookes added his name to a list of try-scorers after the ball was recycled after another lineout.

Flanagan improved it before making way for Dan Eastwood.

Fleet scored again through Bowling, but Winnington’s supporters roared last when replacement Jimmy Moran intercepted before sprinting to the line.

Eastwood’s kick added gloss for the hosts.

Farr added: “Fleetwood gave us a game, and it might have gone either way early on.

“Everybody contributed by working hard and my players should be proud they entertained the crowd with some great tries.”
