TEENAGERS from Northwich Fencing Club have been rewarded for recent performances with selection for the national team in their category.

Harry Gibson and Bronwen Hyde both collected bronze medals during the British Fencing National Championships at the University of Nottingham, the former in the cadet boys’ epee.

Meanwhile his clubmate classified third overall in the cadet girls’ foil.

Gibson, aged 16, then repeated that feat during a ranking competition at the same venue.

Now rated fourth in the UK, the Sir John Deane’s College student has since been invited to represent Great Britain at competitions in Grenoble, Bonn and Copenhagen before the end of the year.

Hyde, 15, is in line to do the same in Budapest after impressing again in the women’s foil during the Manchester Cadet International at Bolton.

She now sits just outside the top 10 in the national rankings.

The duo – both of whom have competed previously at European events for England – train with their clubmates every Monday at Weaverham High School, from 7pm.
