MATT Robinson enters the final round of the 2018 season still in with a chance of claiming a national title.

He occupies second spot in the British Superkart Association’s F125 Open Championship after closing a gap to front-runner Liam Morley during the past two meetings.

The Northwich ace followed a maiden win in the category at Donington Park in June with another when the series stopped at Anglesey last month.

It leaves him 23 points adrift of his rival ahead of three races at Pembrey, in south Wales, this weekend.

And he warmed up with an encouraging performance at home circuit Oulton Park, where he celebrated a pair of class victories when the Superkarting-UK Club Championship paid a recent visit.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a productive day at the Little Budworth track, setting the fastest lap during practice and then in qualifying to secure a front-row position on the grid.

In a field of machines with bigger engines and more power, he crossed the line fourth on the road at the end of race one and sixth in the second sprint.

However on both occasions he was the pick of the drivers with an 125cc kart.

“There is a lot of work to do,” said Robinson, who has worked as consulting analyst for Deloitte UK in London after graduating from Lancaster University last year.

“But I’ll keep on pushing until the end and never give up.”

A 15-minute qualifying session on Saturday morning is followed by a race of the same duration in the afternoon.

Two more races follow on Sunday.
