ELLIE Cushen will become the latest Northwich Rowing Club member to compete her country when she takes part in the Home International Regatta on Saturday.

The teenager has been selected to represent England in the junior women’s single scull at the annual event, which takes place this year in Cork.

“We’ve a talented squad travelling to Ireland,” said team manager Tim Liversedge.

“I’m confident we’ll see some solid performances with a number of returning rowers from the 2017 squad alongside many exciting newcomers.”

Cushen is one of 76 rowers from 29 clubs across the country to be included in a squad to take on rivals from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

She has continued to progress since a sensational, and unexpected, victory at the British Rowing Junior Championships two years ago.

And a series of encouraging performances in 2018 attracted the attention of selectors for the national team.

Cushen was part of an under 17s girls’ quad to take silver for Northwich at the Junior Sculling Head in March.

The same combination were runners-up as well at the Junior Sculling Regatta.

Along with clubmates Charlotte Almond and Josh Burke, Cushen attended trials for the British junior team in April.

She then helped a Northwich junior women’s quad to the last 16 at Henley Women’s Regatta where it took the fastest crew in the field to beat them.

She was invited to a race-off – described as a ‘last chance’ by coach Jed Barlow, at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham last Thursday for the right to stay on and take part in further tests over the weekend.

The senior men and women race in 10 events, while the junior men and women compete in seven each.

All racing is scheduled for Saturday.
