IT was the turn of experienced heads to serve a reminder of their considerable talent as the cricket season reached its halfway stage last weekend.

Mike Cushion and Derek Bowyer, of Oakmere and Barnton respectively, proved they can still play match-winning roles for their respective clubs’ second teams.

Dave Ashley did what he does best too for Davenham.

A youngster still shone too though; teenager Tharusha Fernando’s first five-wicket haul for Northwich could be a sign of things to come as he continues to adapt to English pitches after arriving in April from Sri Lanka.

Here’s a round-up of the best displays:

Tharusha Fernando (Northwich) (took 5-74 against Christleton in Cheshire County League)

The Sri Lankan’s first five-fer since arriving at Moss Farm almost included a hat-trick after he dismissed Javed Iqbal and Atif Bajwa with successive deliveries.

Mubashir Hassan denied him a treble, only to be trapped LBW moments later.

Tharusha’s haul helped restrict the visitors to a total below 200, and takes his wicket-tally for the campaign beyond 20.

Only fellow spinner Andrew Dufty has more for Northwich’s first-team this season.

SCORECARD: Northwich 128-9 Christleton 199-8

Dave Ashley (Davenham seconds) (scored 101 not out against Stockport seconds in Cheshire County League)

His innings was a match-winning one for Davenham’s seconds at Butcher’s Stile last weekend.

Chasing 192 to beat visitors Stockport, he contributed 101 to the home team’s total as they registered a four-wicket win that leaves them fourth in Division Two at the campaign’s halfway stage.

A fourth career ton – his first was back in 2005 – is a reminder of what he is capable of.

Jonny Wales (Winnington Park) (took 7-43 against Middlewich in Cheshire League)

The leg-spinner produced one of his best performances to help knock over Middlewich for 166.

A seven-wicket haul takes his career total for Winnington past 250, and is his third five-fer of the 2018 campaign.

Along with Michael Dunning, captain Alec Butcher knows he has in his attack two bowlers that can turn any Cheshire League game in Park’s favour.

Mike Cushion (Oakmere seconds) (took 6-26 against Woodford seconds in Cheshire League)

The veteran seamer brought down the curtain on a remarkable month after taking six wickets in Oakmere seconds’ victory over their Woodford counterparts.

He struck in all five Cheshire League Division A matches during June, including two five-fers, to finish with a total of 20.

No rival bowler in the section has taken more wickets than he has this term, and teammate David Norton is only four behind with 25.

Derek Bowyer (Barnton seconds) (took 5-35 against Neston fourths in Cheshire League)

Barnton’s seconds ended a four-match run in the Cheshire League without a victory when they prevailed against Neston’s fourths at Broomsedge.

And the contribution of Derek Bowyer, who took 5-35, helped apply brakes to the visitors’ run-rate as they closed on 174-9.

He ripped through the lower-order, and claimed the wicket of leading-scorer Chrissie Lacey (59) after the opener had set the pace early on.
