STEVE Burr plans to reassemble his title-winning Northwich Victoria side to take on the current incarnation for a celebratory friendly.
The former manager, who guided Vics to promotion from the Conference North as champions in 2006 after steering them to an FA Cup third-round encounter with Premier League side Sunderland, has agreed to bring that team together again to mark the relaunch of the club.
They visit Barnton this Sunday for a friendly against Vics' current crop, kick off 2pm.
“It’s a great gesture and we’re all excited to see that group of players on the field again,” said Dave Thomas, Vics’ secretary.
“We wanted to do something special to celebrate the fact that the club has changed hands, and this seems like a perfect way to do it.”
Jonny Allan and Paul Brayson, a formidable strike pairing that fired Northwich to first place, are among those that have agreed already to take part.
Michael Carr is another one.
The list also includes Richard Battersby, Kieran Charnock, Stuart Elliott, Danny Mayman, Carlos Roca and Mark Sale while Ryan Brown and Gareth Griffiths – who also played under Burr the following year – have promised to play too.
Admission is £1, and children that attend will receive a free season ticket for the team’s forthcoming campaign in the North West Counties League’s top-flight.
Another familiar face set to attend – and play – is former fans’ favourite Steve Walters, a director of Offside Trust.
The organisation is committed to supporting survivors of child abuse, and to helping safeguard the game’s youngest players.
Vics will become one of its partners following Walters’ visit.
