A violin crafted from driftwood to help raise awareness about the environment is to be played at an international  marine concert.

Steve Burnett crafted the instrument from a poplar log he found on a beach in East Lothian and it was first unveiled last summer.

The violin, which Mr Burnett has named Il Mare (Italian for the sea), is inscribed inside with the words “A voice from, and for the sea”.

Violinist and composer Daniel Safford, from Philadelphia in the US, played the instrument on Portobello beach in Edinburgh ahead of his performance at Scotland’s International Marine Conference in Glasgow this week.

The conference will focus on current national and international actions to protect the marine environment.

Mr Safford will be joined at the concert on Wednesday evening by Scottish violinist Thoren Ferguson and St Mary’s Music School violin pupil Viktor Seifert, who will also play pieces on Il Mare.
