AN older person dies every five hours as a result of a fall.
That is the shock statistic from the latest national figures - and now a campaign to cut the number of falls has been launched in Middlewich.
Cheshire East Council’s health improvement team is running classes for those aged 65 and over on Fridays between 2pm and 3pm at Willowmere in East Road.
The classes are called ‘Be Steady Be Safe’ and are designed to improve balance, strength and confidence.
Clr Janet Clowes, cabinet member for health and adult social care, said: “These classes are ideal for anyone who is worried about falling, has suffered a fall or is experiencing poor balance or mobility.
“Poor strength and balance are key risk factors in falls but these can be improved with specially designed exercises.”
The classes are available across the borough at a cost of £2 and no booking is required.
