THIS week’s Tidy our Town pays a visit to Winsford’s poorly maintained underpass, with Winsford’s mayor calling for it to be filled in.

The underpass has been at the centre of safety and flooding concerns for several years.

Winsford’s mayor, Clr Steve Smith said: “There hasn’t been a real need for the underpass since the pelican crossing was put in when the college was built – there’s no purpose for it now at all.

“I’ve raised concerns in the past about the underpass flooding – it does flood, it’s dark under there and it’s just not appropriate.

“It’s time it was filled in.”

The Guardian has been looking at various Winsford “grot spots” as part of its Tidy our Town campaign, an initiative aiming to raise the profile of areas that the Winsford community feel require investment, cleaning up or simply bulldozing.

One area currently being looked at is Winsford’s Flashes.

Last week, clr Smith criticised Cheshire West and Chester Council for the lack of attention being paid to the Flashes, following recent flooding.

Since then, wheels have been put in motion to improve the area.

Clr Brian Clarke, ward member for Winsford Wharton, said: “I’ve spoken to the officers and we’re going to sit down and talk about what we can do to improve the site.

“We’re looking at who owns what and we’re going to try and make it a much nicer place, somewhere where people can meet.”

What do you think? Do you know an area of Winsford that needs tidying?
