A 28-YEAR-OLD from Comberbach has taken on the challenge of cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats this month, with a unique twist – he’ll be performing with his acoustic guitar at gigs along the way.

Sam Stephens, otherwise known as ‘Sat Nav Sam’, is a former marketing manager for a worldwide white water wear manufacturer.

He began his cycling feat on Sunday and hopes to complete the ride within a month.

In addition to raising money for the charity Water Aid, the cycle and six arranged gigs, including a performance at Strummercamp, Manchester, will also help Sam to promote his own brand of melodic, sing-along pop music through the release of his debut album, the self-entitled Sat Nav Sam.

The Guardian spoke to Sam a few days before he was due to leave for Land’s End.

He said: “It’s the first charity bike ride I’ve done, and to be honest, I’m a bit nerve-wracked.

“Although just last weekend I took part in a cycle race, and our team came fifth out of 50 competitors.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out there and cycling.

“The trip has taken so much organisation and logistically it has been very difficult.

“I’m excited to get out there and entertain people, and also raise a lot of money for Water Aid – I just want to get on with it!”

Sam explained that his inspiration to take on such a demanding feat, and decision to choose the charity Water Aid, came from working in his previous role.

He added: “I chose to donate to Water Aid because through working in a water-based industry, it seemed like a good charity to support.

“Also, water is going to be what keeps me going while riding.”

Sam also had a personal plea of his own.

He said: “I’ve not booked anywhere for my homecoming gig as yet – so if any venue in Northwich is willing to pay for my train ticket from John O’Groats then I’ll very happily perform there!

“I’m trying to get back for Friday, June 11.”
