NORTHWICH Victoria cruised to the Nationwide Conference North title on Saturday with a professional display against long standing rivals Stafford Rangers.

Two goals from Jonny Allan and a trademark super striker from Chris Williams secured the points and sent the 3,000 Trickies inside the Victoria Stadium wild with delight.

At the final whistle, fans poured on to the pitch to congratulate their heroes who have been head and shoulders above the rest of the division for most of the season.

Yet it could have been so different on Saturday and for much of the first half Stafford, who at one time were 14 points clear of Northwich, looked to have spoiled the party.

Vics, as ever, looked to play attractive football, but in Stafford they came up against a side who are also renowned for playing with style.

On 11 minutes Allan ran to the byline and crossed into the box for Paul Brayson, but the striker's shot was weak and went straight to Rangers keeper Dean Williams.

A minute later and Allan was guilty of a tame effort when he latched on to a Richard Battersby pass and plonked the ball into Williams' hands.

On 14 minutes Vics' Williams tried his luck with a long range effort that flew past the post.

And Vics were made to pay for their missed chances when Stafford took the lead.

They had threatened through Neil Grayson on 22 minutes and a minute later found the net.

Danny Edwards beat his man on the left, cut inside and crossed into the box where Robin Gibson was waiting to fire diving header past Kris Rogers.

The Victoria Stadium was stunned into silence, but Vics kept their discipline and belief and fought back with a neat move which Brayson just failed to finish.

But on 37 minutes Northwich were level.

A long ball out of defence from Rogers was collected by Allan.

He outpaced Craig Lovett and evaded a late challenge before side footing the ball into the far corner of the Stafford goal.

And in added time at the end of the first half Allan give Vics the lead.

This time it was Stuart Elliot who released the striker, but the outcome was the same as Allan bored down on goal and applied an inch-perfect finish.

The second half took some time to get going as neither team wanted to give anything away.

But it was Vics who showed more desire and they were unlucky not to add to their total when Williams, Sale and Carr all went close.

It was fitting that Williams, who has made a huge difference to Northwich since his arrival, sealed the win.

With 75 minutes gone Williams collected a pass from Sale.

His initial cross came back out to him and he cut inside his marker before unleashing a beautiful left footed shot from the edge of the box that nestled into the back of the net.
