MORE than 150 visitors explored the secrets beneath their feet during a community archaeology event.
The Big Dig project, held at the Age UK Cheshire community centre in Barbers Lane, Northwich, welcomed visitors on Saturday, for a day of excavation, discovery, and hands-on history.
Led by Northwich Uncovered and supported by professional archaeologists, the event offered visitors a chance to take part in live digs across the site.

Giles Rigby, project leader, said: "What started as an idea to uncover some of Northwich’s hidden history has grown into something involving volunteers, local residents, archaeologists and families.
"South Trafford Archaeological Group have been a huge part of helping us make that happen, and Age UK Cheshire have given us the opportunity to put archaeology right at the heart of the community."
Among the discoveries were a fragment of a Roman amphora, a lead trade weight, and a copper leaf with a motif on it.

The event also raised more than £750 for Age UK Cheshire, supporting the charity’s work with older people across Cheshire.
Andrew Cooper, MP for Mid Cheshire, was among the attendees and took the time to enjoy homemade cakes prepared by charity volunteers.
The funds raised will help Age UK Cheshire continue its vital services for older people in the area.
