A FAST-PACED Sherlock Holmes mystery will light up the stage this September.

Moriarty, a comedy thriller by Tony Award-winning playwright Ken Ludwig, will be performed by the Harlequin Players at the Harlequin Theatre in Northwich from September 8 to 12.

The play is a high-speed homage to the world of Sherlock Holmes, featuring just five actors taking on 40 roles in a story packed with disguises, betrayals, and sharp dialogue.

Emily Duffy, who directs the production, said: "Ludwig takes us on a high-speed romp through London and its surrounds, and across Europe, with fast-paced dialogue and even faster costume changes.

"And all of this in the company of one of the greatest literary icons, Sherlock Holmes.

"What a treat."

The plot centres on Holmes and Watson teaming up with actress Irene Adler to recover stolen letters from the King of Bohemia, with the fate of world peace hanging in the balance.

The play combines the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with Ludwig’s trademark wit and theatrical flair.

Moriarty is the latest production in the Harlequin Players’ 80th anniversary year, following critical acclaim for UNDERDOG: The Other Other Brontë.

That production earned success at the National Drama Festival, where Emily Duffy won best actress for her portrayal of Charlotte Brontë and Carole Shinkfield was nominated for Best Director.

Emily said: "Moriarty is an ensemble piece, demanding a tight-knit, collaborative cast.

"For me, ensemble theatre is one of my favourite genres to watch.

"It creates a memorable and potentially awe-inspiring experience, and that's what I'm looking forward to bringing for our forthcoming production."

The company promises the same mix of theatrical craft and playful energy that has defined their recent work.

Moriarty is recommended for audiences aged teens and up and is described by the Harlequin Players as a 'love letter to classic detective storytelling that also never takes itself too seriously'.

Performances begin at 7.45pm each night.
