EARLIER this year, the Northwich Guardian launched our World Cup-themed Win Kits for Kids competition, which gave junior teams across Mid Cheshire the chance to win £1,000 of sports equipment.

We printed special tokens in our newspaper, and every token collected and handed in to a team counted as one point.

Our lucky winners this year are Witton Albion U8s.

“We want the kids to have fun, build relationships, and make memories,” said manager Mark Robinson.

“As a team, we’ve gone from strength to strength.”

Witton Albion decided, as coaches, not to turn any kids away, despite the local junior football league reducing the number of children that can play in matches on a Saturday.

“We don’t want to deny any child access to football,” added Mark.

“It might be that you are predominantly training, not playing in matches – but we’d rather have you here and involved in football.”

The money comes at a crucial time for the team, with around 25 children now taking part.

“We were actually debating how we’re going to find the money to buy some of this stuff – it was becoming a real challenge,” said Mark.

“It’s massively taken away some of the immediate pressure of how we’re going to facilitate what we’re trying to do.

“It’s really dug us out of a bit of a hole – thank you.”

The competition was run in partnership with THOR UK.

A THOR spokesman said: "THOR UK is delighted to once again be supporting the local communities around Cheshire by backing the Northwich & Winsford Guardian’s £1,000 World Cup community kit competition.

"Resources for grassroots sports clubs can be hard to come by, so we’re proud to back this activity, and give local sports clubs and schools the chance to win £1,000 worth of sports kit.

"At THOR UK, and throughout the wider THOR Group, we are committed to supporting the communities in which we operate.

"We take a responsible approach to our role, investing locally and contributing to initiatives that deliver meaningful, long-term value."
