MID Cheshire’s MP has welcomed the government's new plans designed to make apprenticeships, colleges, and technical education more accessible.
The government has announced a package of reforms aimed at removing financial barriers which prevent young people from taking up apprenticeships, alongside significant investment to create thousands of additional college places across England.
From this summer, eligible families will be able to access a new apprenticeship bursary worth up to £4,500 a year, where financial circumstances might otherwise prevent a young person from accepting an apprenticeship.
The government is also fully funding apprenticeship training for all eligible under-25s from August 1, while employers will be able to receive up to £8,000 to support taking on young apprentices.
Andrew Cooper, Labour MP for Mid Cheshire, welcomed the measures and said they would help ensure local young people can build successful careers without feeling they have to leave the area.
He said: "Every young person deserves the chance to build a secure future, whatever path they choose after school.
"For too long we've treated university as the only route to success.
“That's never reflected the reality of the fantastic careers which can be built through apprenticeships, technical education, and skilled trades.
"These changes will help remove some of the financial barriers which have stopped young people and their families from choosing apprenticeships, while giving employers greater confidence to invest in the next generation.
"Mid Cheshire has outstanding manufacturers, engineering businesses, healthcare providers, digital companies, and construction firms which all need skilled local people.
“Investing in apprenticeships and technical education is not only good for young people.
“It is essential for our local economy.
"I regularly meet employers across Northwich, Winsford, Middlewich, and the surrounding villages who tell me they need skilled workers.
“Helping more local young people gain those skills means better opportunities for them and stronger businesses for our area."
The government is also investing £287 million to create more than 22,000 additional places across colleges and other post-16 education providers, helping ensure young people have access to high-quality education and training closer to home.
The measures form part of the government's wider Plan for Change, strengthening the link between education and employment by expanding opportunities for young people to gain practical skills, technical qualifications, and valuable workplace experience.
