A THRIVING chess club in Northwich is celebrating five years of nurturing young talent.
Northwich Junior Chess Club, based at Victoria Road Primary School, offers coaching to children aged five to 15 during term time and has grown steadily since it began in 2021.
The club marked the end of its fifth season with a session and prize-giving ceremony on Saturday, July 18.
Richard Betts, head coach, said: "The group gets stronger each year.
"This season has seen nine young players represent the senior club in league competition.
"They perform and beat adult players.
"It has been known for some of the kids to occasionally beat the coaches too."
As players continue to improve, the club has begun introducing more advanced training.

Richard added: "Now they know the basics, we are starting to teach members advanced chess skills, especially strategy and tactics.
"Chess is a great game, requiring patience, determination, and thinking skills.
"The kids have come a long way in the last five years."
Northwich Junior Chess Club is part of the English Chess Federation’s junior development pathway, and plans to compete again in the Northwich Schools Competition in November, as well as other competitions in the Northwest.
Sessions are supported by parents and new families are always welcome.
The club is open to complete beginners as well as more experienced young players.
Richard added: "If you can already play, then we will help you to improve."
The junior club is a spin-off from the Northwich Chess Club, which meets on Monday nights at The Gladstone Club. New adult members are always welcome.
