A CREMATORIUM has been recognised among the UK’s best green spaces.
Birches Crematorium in Lach Dennis has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, marking it as one of the country’s top outdoor sites.
The award, now in its 30th year, is an international quality mark for well-managed parks and green spaces.
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: "Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy.
"Birches Crematorium has shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed.
"Congratulations to everyone involved."
The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.
This year, a record 2,391 locations across the UK received the Green Flag Award.
The recognition highlights the dedication of those who maintain these spaces to a high standard for both visitors and the wider community.
It also points to the growing importance of accessible, well-kept green areas as part of everyday life.
While parks and public spaces face challenges, Mr Todd believes they are a vital investment.
He said: "With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.
"As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard."
The Green Flag Award sets the benchmark for green space management across the UK and internationally.
It applies to publicly accessible spaces and must be renewed each year through a fresh application.
A related Green Flag Community Award also acknowledges quality green areas managed by voluntary and community groups.
