WINSFORD residents will soon be able to play padel without paying through the nose as the town prepares to welcome its first ever courts.
The plans were given the go-ahead at the Winsford Town Council (WTC) meeting on Monday, June 15, with councillors pledging to make the facilities more affordable than other venues in the area.
The courts will be developed at Over Recreation Ground on the site of the former tennis court and the unused training bowling green, bringing one of the UK's fastest-growing sports to the town for the first time.
The plans were approved alongside a new multi-use games area (MUGA) at Wharton Recreation Ground, which will be created using part of the existing hard-standing area.
Padel has surged in popularity in recent years, but court hire can often come with a hefty price tag.
Depending on location, private operators can charge between £30 and £60 per hour for a court.
WTC hopes its new facilities will offer a cheaper alternative, helping more residents take up the sport and stay active.
Winsford town councillor for Verdin ward, Wayne Fletcher, said: “The aim is to make them affordable than other padel facilities in the area, giving local people another way to get active.”
The arrival of the courts means local players will no longer have to travel outside the town to enjoy the fast-growing racquet sport, which combines elements of tennis and squash and is renowned for being easy to learn and highly sociable.
